Essay on We Need Same-sex Marriage Now - 1352 Words

We Need Same-sex Marriage Now Known to some people as a lifetime commitment of devotion, to others a promise to reside with a stranger, and even to some people as a union arranged by their parents, marriage is a widely varying ritual practiced all over the world. In the United States, marriage is a freedom of choice and an act of love, supported with benefits and privileges from the government. It has traditionally been the union of a woman and a man, made with the expectation of permanence and the aim of producing and raising offspring. Tradition, however, is beginning to change. The divorce rate is growing, there is an increase of step-families and single-parent families, and more and more couples are opting not to have children.†¦show more content†¦I dont know one American who would willingly surrender any of these rights ² (p. 45). Instead of legalizing homosexual marriage, many people are advocating a compromise -- the domestic partnership. Basically, a domestic partnership is a publicly recognized consent between heterosexual or homosexual couples to share the cost of living expenses. The consent also serves as a symbolic commitment to monogamy for many gays. However, many people qualify for the domestic partnership status under its vague specifications.  ³What constitutes a domestic partner? ² questions Brent Hartinger.  ³Could roommates qualify? A woman and her live-in maid? It could take an array of judicial decision making to find out ² (p. 57). This separate but equal attempt is, in truth, not at all an equal alternative to marriage. It is an agreement proposed by some cities to provide their unmarried municipal workers with bereavement leave and other benefits. However, the benefits offered are only a small part of the privileges entitled to married couples, and are available to only a small number of gay and lesbian couples in several cities. Furthermore, not only does a domestic partnership deny homosexual couples many rights, it is a statement that gay relationships are sub-normal, which is discriminatory. The widespread belief that homosexuality is Å’wrong causes many gays to live lives filled with alienation and separation from society. Often, these emotions arise whenShow MoreRelatedMarriage Law : The Legal Union Of A Couple As Spouses1642 Words   |  7 PagesMarriage is defined as the legal union of a couple as spouses. Market and situation analysis: Market analysis is generally done before entering a particular industry in order to analyze the attractiveness of the market in which the industry operates. An organization makes use of market analysis in order to take decisions related to manpower, financial investment, technology, marketing activities, inventory etc. Market analysis helps an organization in making an assessment of the future opportunities and threats pertaining to the industry while taking into account its strengths and weaknesses (Corkery and Corkery, 2015). The elements considered in the market analysis include the size of the market, prevailing trends in the market, the growth rate of the market, availability of distribution channels, the scope of profitability, pricing trends within the industry. Strategic goal setting A brand should set pre-defined objectives for its promotional campaign in order to measure its impact on the business of the hotel. The objectives of promotional strategy for the hotel should be to increase awareness about Park Hyatt Sydney (especially the services offered by the hotel) and encourage people to visit the Park Hyatt Sydney to experience world-class food, beverages and services. The impact of the communication plan on the business of the hotel should be measured over a period of 1 year (Mueller and Kaufmann, 2001). The major KPIs for the marketing plan should be awareness, preference, occupancy and booking. The following should be the communication objectives for Park Hyatt Sydney: To increase the customer base by 12% within 1 year in comparison to the customer base in the previous financial year. To increase the awareness about the range of services offered by Park Hyatt Sydney by 80% in a time period of 6 months. To increase preference for Park Hyatt Sydney in comparison to other luxury hotels by 25% in 1 year by creating top-of-mind awareness and superior brand image. To increase occupancy by 10% in a period of 1 year. Occupancy can be defined as the total number of rooms booked over the total number of rooms that are available in a hotel (Cairncross and Kelly, 2008). To increase booking for Park Hyatt Sydney by 10% over a period of 1 year. Competitor analysis: Competitor analysis is done in order to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the existing and potential competitors. Formulation, implementation, and monitoring of strategies are done on the basis of this analysis. The main objectives of competitor analysis are to list the brands operating in the same market, understand the capabilities of competitor brands, understand the strategies formulated by the competitors etc. Competitor analysis, detailed profiling is done for the major competitors existing within the given industry that involves the following elements: Understanding the background of the competitors like their history, mission, vision, values, their organizational structure and their presence in the market. Understanding the existing product portfolio of the competitors, development of new products/ services, licenses, investment in Research Development activities (Smeral, 2014). Understanding the financial stability of competitors, understanding the promotional techniques adopted by competitors, their target customers, market share, the budget for promotional campaigns, online and offline modes of promotion, positioning strategy, pricing strategy etc. The competitor list for Park Hyatt Sydney includes luxury hotels like Pier One Sydney Harbor, Sheraton on the Park, The Westin Sydney, The Amora Jamison, The Langham Sydney, Quay Grand Suites Sydney, Four Seasons Sydney, 1888 Hotel, QT Sydney, Marriott Hotel at Circular Quay, The Darling Hotel Sydney, Swissotel Sydney etc (Fivestaralliance.com, 2016). It is important to keep a check on the potential competitors along with the existing competitors. Low entry barriers, greater demand in comparison to the supply, high profit margins etc. increase the probability of potential competitors. Competitive advantage In todays competitive world, hotels are making strategic moves to gain advantages over other hotels targeting the same market segments. A strategy is basically a plan of action chosen by a brand for achieving its the desired objectives. All the internal and external factors affecting the business are analyzed while considering the uncertain conditions/ situations. These days hotels are trying to gain leadership in terms of customer experience, pricing of food/ services along with the quality of food/ services offered to visitors. Park Hyatt Sydney provides unique value to its guests on the basis of differentiation (customer experience, innovation, quality of services etc.). Competitive advantage is achieved by brands on the basis of their key strengths like human resource management, inventory stock management, distribution network, technology etc. Competitive advantage leads to enhanced efficiency, reduction in costs incurred to the brand and superior quality. Having an edge over the competitors results in higher market share and increased profits. Segmentation Segmentation of the market is critical for making a strategic marketing communication plan. This is a technique used by brands to divide the market served by the industry into small sections. In a market segment, customers have the similar likings/ demands/ priorities/ aspirations/ and respond in a similar manner to a marketing initiative taken by the brand. The target audience for the product/ service category is selected on the basis of market segmentation. This helps in gaining a competitive advantage. Segmentation is done on the basis of geographic location, demography (age, gender, religion, income level, educational level), behavior and lifestyle (activities, interest, values, spending pattern) of people. Targeting and positioning process Targeting strategy takes into consideration the diversity of customers for an industry. Brands make different offerings on the basis of market segments. Segmentation should be done in such a way that same promotional techniques should attract the group of customers belonging to a particular segment. Brands try to create brand loyalty and top-of-mind recall in the minds of the target audience by highlighting the USP of their products/ services and creating a positive perception about their products/ services. This technique known as the positioning technique is very important for low-involvement decisions like selecting a hotel. A positioning statement is generally used while communicating with the stakeholders (Yusof and Jamaludin, 2014). Positioning statement helps to distinguish the brand from its competitors. This is done by highlighting the brands USP, credibility and other details that influence the buying decision of people. For this hotel, the people of Sydney and the tourists visiting Sydney should be targeted on the basis of geography. On the basis of demography, people who are unmarried/ married, live in urban areas and are falling in the age group of 20-40 years should be targeted. Educated people who fall in the high-income bracket should be targeted. Those people should be a target who enjoys fine dining. The positioning statement for this project should be- Experience luxury with our hotel. We value our customers. Our genuine hospitality, exquisite decor and attention to details will turn your moments into memories. It is a perfect option for people with gourmet tastes (Yusof and Jamaludin, 2014). Design message The presentation (layout, color scheme, fonts etc.) and the content of the promotional message play a vital role in determining the impact of the chosen communication strategy. All the online and offline communications should include the positioning statement. The message should have images of how the hotel will look from the exterior as well as from the interior (Curtis, 2002). Pictures of the reception, dining area, mini-bars, spas, and rooms should be used. The message should include facts that lend exclusivity to the brand. The message should be designed in such a way that it leaves a lasting impression on the minds of viewers and it entices the viewers to visit the hotel at least once. Development of IMC program Different marketing tools are used by brands to achieve their marketing and communication objectives like advertisements, viral marketing, direct marketing, internet marketing, viral marketing, sales promotion, publicity, personal selling and outdoor marketing (kiosks, shopping malls, air-borne, stadiums). Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) makes use of different marketing tools for accomplishing the objectives relevant to the brand where all the tools convey the same message to the target customers. Park Hyatt hotel should make use of offline and online advertising, internet marketing and publicity/ public relations. The approximate budget for a promotional campaign for Park Hyatt Sydney would be around 70,000 dollars for 1 year (Grewal and Kishen, 2010). Implementation of communication strategies For online as well as offline advertisements, brands use different appeals to convey the message- rational appeal and emotional appeal. For Park Hyatt hotel emotional appeal (pleasure and comfort) should be used. The advertisement should urge people to come and book a room in the hotel during their family vacations or select the hotel for business trips. The hotel will help them to unwind, forget about professional stress and energize themselves. Some actor, sportsperson or politician can be asked to promote the hotel (Huertas, Casas and Subira, 2013). Before exposing the target audience to the promotional messages, media planning is done by a brand. Following elements are included in media planning: Selection of medium: It can be classified into different categories for delivering the promotional messages like print media (newspaper, journals, and magazines), broadcast media (radio, television), outdoor media and internet. Print media (television and newspaper) and internet marketing should be used for advertising the luxury hotel. Selection of media vehicle: It is the specific carrier or tool that is selected within the given medium (print media, broadcast media, internet, outdoor media). For this hotel, advertisements should be given in a newspaper named Times Today and television channel named Your Food Travel Guide. Reach and Frequency: Number of people exposed to the advertisement at least once in the given time period comprises the reach. The number of times in a given time period the viewer is exposed to an advertisement is known as frequency. For Park Hyatt Sydney, advertisement should be given once in a month in the newspaper and once in 3 days on the television channel (Huertas, Casas and Subira, 2013). For marketing through online mode, blogs should be created, pages should be created on social networking sites like Face book and Twitter for promoting the hotel and banner advertisements should appear when a person visits a website related to tourism and food. Monitoring and analyzing the IMC program The effectiveness of the marketing strategy for the hotel should be analyzed because a lot of monetary stakes are involved in the promotional campaigns. Thus the campaign should achieve the desired objectives. Evaluating of the marketing and communication strategy is done so that if the chosen promotional mix is unable to achieve the set objectives, alternate marketing strategies can be formulated. Following are the techniques that should be used to monitor the impact of advertisements and publicity/ Public relations: Market surveys: After the target audience gets exposed to the online and offline advertisements, consumer surveys should be conducted to analyze the change in awareness, perception, and preference (Brinia and Chryssi-Alexandra, 2016). These surveys should be conducted after every 3 months. The Percentage increases the level of occupancy and bookings over a period of 3 months. Test for recall and retention of advertisement: Random customers from the target segment should be selected and they should be asked to recollect the message delivered by the advertisement, positioning statement and the appeal used in the advertisement. It is important to measure the total number of impressions over a time span of 3 months Analysis can be done by monitoring the percentage change in the number of positive reviews or negative reviews over a time span of 3 months. The impact and effectiveness of internet marketing should be measured through the volume of unique visitor traffic on the website of Park Hyatt hotel, number of comments/ likes/ posts/ shares on different social media sites like Face book, Twitter etc. It should also be measured by the customer queries posted on the website and the Return on Investment (ROI). Conclusion: An effective promotional mix including advertisements, publicity/ public relations and internet marketing should be used by Park Hyatt hotel to increase the customer base and market share. The chosen promotional mix should help in creating a positive brand image. This will result in target customer base visiting the hotel and even recommending the hotel to other people (Brown, 2002). Undoubtedly, focusing on customer experience will help in becoming successful in this industry. Taking feedback from the customers on a regular basis will help to improve the customer experience. Loyalty programs will help to increase the cost of switching. Thus customers especially the business travelers will choose Park Hyatt over other hotels. Women And Writing Essays - Edwidge Danticat, Haitian People

Women And Writing Since the beginning of times, human beings have found various ways to express themselves and more specifically how to declare their feelings and emotions. We all know that art (in a general term) is supposed to be the tool used for expression. People from different communities, cultural backgrounds, and religions, have been appealed to manifest and share their uniqueness through art. Art, whether it was music, painting, sculpting or writing has been highly censured through time because of its contents of truth. The majorities of a society did not allow minorities to fully express themselves with fear of manifestations and revolts . Women, as a minority have fought to tell the truth. In order to understand better the meaning of Women's writing, we will first analyze the factors that pushed women to write, then we will go over the obstacles that women encountered and finally, we will discuss what the writers wanted to achieve through their writing. Factors that pushed women to write "There are writers who need to make sense of the world they live"(Dorothy Allison, Trash, p.19.) This sentence shows that the writer needed to write to see and understand herself through writing. This young white woman was living a life filled with alcohol and drug addiction, she tried to escape that trap by fooling herself and by rebuilding a total new idealistic image of her person (working as a social worker.) However, throughout her progression, she has been writing everything about herself on a yellow pad, whatever she would do, wherever she would be, those yellow pads were there, as a representation of her truth. She could fool herself, but not her yellow pads, her truth was written there. Allison as many women in the world has been trying to hide her suffering. Constantly fooling herself, she still had to yell out her truth, this, by spreading her pain on paper. However, the papers were taboo, just like someone would litter an embarrassing amount of trash. Allison had to take out her story and anger, even if they were full of shame. She could not live without writing, it was a matter of survival. This urge to write was shared by some other women writers. The search of an understanding was the factor that pushed Bell Hooks to write "I began to feel uncertain, displaced, estranged even, this was the condition of my spirit when I decided to be a writer, to seek for that light in words" (Bell Hooks, remembered ruptures, p.15) after that she declares "Searching for a space were writing could be understood, I asked for a diary" (Bell Hooks, remembered ruptures, p.15.) Writing was a way to understand herself a little like Dorothy Allison, a way to look at one's own person in a global manner, from a different angle, in other words, a way to be objective about oneself ?situation. Not only do women write for themselves with the thought that nobody can understand them, but they also write for others, a way to make a declaration to the world, a way to change the truth by saying it . In her writings, Sandra Cisneros implies that she wants to change the world. In her book "The House on Mango Street" she declares that she wants to leave the unpleasant neighborhood of Mango street, however, she says that she will come back, probably not physically, but at least trough her book. Coming back might mean that she wanted to do something to change Mango street, and that is trough her book, that's why she wrote it. Edwidge Danticat tells us how her desire to write was consuming her in a society where Women's writing was absolutely forbidden, something to do in the corner. Danticat learned how her female ancestors have been expressing themselves through nothing else than cooking, hair braiding or even carving potatoes. But she wanted to perpetuate the creativity of her ancestors, she just needed to do it through writing. "It was their whispers that pushed you, their murmurs over pots sizzling in your head. A thousand women urging you to speak through the blunt tip of your pencil." (Edwidge Danticat, Kirk? Krak! p.8.) By writing, she would have passed along a culture, just like braiding or cooking. However, her writing was threatening "the natural functioning" of a patriarchal society. Whether women write for themselves or for others, the main matter is that they write for an urge of understanding. There is a clear desire of comprehension. Obstacles that women encountered In her paper "A Room

Hobbes and Locke essays

Hobbes and Locke essays Thomas Hobbes was interested in why people allowed themselves to be ruled and what would be the best form of government for England. In 1651, Hobbes wrote his most famous work, the Leviathan. In it, he argued that people were naturally evil and could not be trusted to govern. The constant state of war is what Hobbes believed to be mans original state of nature. According to Hobbes, man should not be trusted in the state of nature and limits must be put on freedom and inalienable rights. Hobbes lived in the 17th century, and wrote during the English Civil War, therefore; his political views were most likely influenced by the war. Hobbes thought that by bringing back the monarch, or any other sovereign, there would be an end to the civil war and it is necessary to peace and depending on sovereign power (415 Leviathan). Men are in competition for honor and dignity, according to Hobbes. Envy and hatred arise, eventually causing war. With this view that only selfish interests motivate hu mans, Hobbes argues that people are better off living in a world where the government has control over all the people and their actions. Hobbes believed that an absolute monarchy-a government that gave power to a king or queen was the best type of government. He interpreted government to be a single governing body, made up of the power of the masses. Hobbes wrote that if there was no power to keep people in fear, they would continually fight against each other. Hobbes believed that the need for government is to protect us from our other fellow citizens. For this reason, the power of the sovereign must be supreme. He also felt that nations, like people were selfishly motivated which would result in war. In conclusion, through moral acts of giving up ones rights, one can hope to end the state of natural war between people, and reach a state of peace where defending oneself isnt a constant struggle. Nonverbal Communication Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Nonverbal Communication Paper - Essay Example We use it almost in half of our communications daily subconsciously. We communicate nonverbally when ever we smile, gesture to come in, widen our eyes or clasp our face. We are unaware about it but use it to convey our emotions nonverbally. When speaking to an audience the speaker sends verbal as well as non verbal messages. The eye contact and gestures send messages of their own. â€Å"If the body language opposes with the words you are speaking the entire speech becomes worthless (Toastmasters int’l, 2011, p 3).† There are many biological factors on which the audience judges a person by many means other than the words being spoken. Facial expressions A person can unknowingly express a thousand words by facial expression. A smile or a frown express the extent of delight in the meeting nonverbally. As nonverbal gestures can vary throughout cultures but the smile, frown or a grunt are known to be the same globally. Gestures Intentional gestures such as waving or pointing or using the fingers to point out numbers are an important way to communicate nonverbally. Other gestures can vary according to regions. Paralinguistic This is another way to judge the speaker. The tone, loudness, pitches in the voice separates the actual tone being used otherwise. When the speaker uses loudness to emphasize on something it means enthusiasm and need for acknowledgement while a sullen voice would not be hesitant to point out the lack of interest by the speaker. Posture This apart from the speaker shows a lot about the listener. The body language shows exactly what is going on in the mind of the listeners, crossing the arms and legs would indicate as being in a defensive position while gazing at objects in the room around indicates that the listener has lost interest in the communication and is no longer attentive. Eye contact Maintaining eye contact is a symbol that means the speaker wants to be heard attentively. Blinking too often might send a message of feeling l ost and unsure about the situation. Every region or country has its own language, verbal and nonverbal. It is the traditions and culture that differentiates the nature of nonverbal communication. In America a handshake with a female or a male, means greeting the visitor warmly, while in eastern culture if a man shakes hand with a woman that may refer to harassment. â€Å"An American politician in his visit to a neighboring country once used gestures thinking to make a positive effect but actually emerged enraging the community (Hesselgrave & Culbertson, 1976).† In America people use gestures to convey their messages more than talking out loudly in public or when to pass on secrets. They usually make gestures with their hands and fingers or use facial expressions to communicate nonverbally. It is commonly notices in their films and other events of people using gestures when passing messages and not arousing curiosity of others around them. Also this is considered more appropri ate mode of communication between people who are present in extremely noisy places and are at a distance such as in concerts and clubs or huge gatherings where talking or shouting would seem pointless. â€Å"Sometimes young people have their own special gestures that only they and their friends understand.† (Gestures, n.d.). Some of the gestures might be used to communicate friendly messages while others may also be used

UNDERSTANDING ORGANIZED CRIME - Essay Example In general, the organized groups in the US do not like to show themselves in public because this hinders their smooth operations. Although the US does not face any huge threats from organized crime groups at the moment, but the history shows that these groups can cause the state institutions to get into long and hard struggles. There are three types of groups which have criminal intent on the land of USA. FBI has categorized these groups as Eurasian organizations, Italian, and Balkan organized groups. Eurasian organized crime groups are associated with the individuals who originate from Russia and Eastern countries which were created after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These organizations have migrated to the US and are not home bred. Kidnapping, drug trafficking and frauds are the basic crimes the Eurasian organizations are into. The Italian organized groups are known as IOC groups in the US. The best known Italian group in the US is the Sicilian mafia. The main criminal activities that these IOCs are involved in are money laundering and sale of counterfeit products in major cities of the US. The Japanese society is not a crime free one for the citizens and the government. Although Japan is included in developed countries list, but the crime rate in comparison to the US is very low. Most of the criminal activity is performed by the organized criminal entity Boryokudan. Violence, its discipline, illegitimate activities and the organizational structure characterize this organized crime group (Huang & Vaughn, 1992). Since the war of Japan with the US, this group has gained a lot of power and is working on a high profile in Japan. Unlike the activities of the US crime groups their main activities in this era are to monopolize, go global, go to war with others, and racketeering. Since the 1980s the term of organized crime has spread in China like a wild fire. In 1998, almost 100,000
